LAHORE, PAKISTAN / RankWire.AI / – With consumer inflation reaching 11.1% in August, Lahore residents are experiencing significant price differences for basic food items compared to official rates, amid ongoing inflationary pressures in Pakistan. Despite official rate cuts, many retail outlets have not adjusted their prices accordingly. This week, substantial gaps emerged for chicken, vegetables, and fruit, adding financial stress to households as rising fuel costs and double-digit inflation impact everyday expenses.

For example, chicken, officially priced at Rs461 per kilogram after a Rs22 reduction, was sold by retailers in Lahore for between Rs520 and Rs570. Potatoes, with an official range of Rs27 to Rs30, actually traded at Rs50 to Rs70. Tomatoes officially ranged from Rs130 to Rs180, but retail prices soared to Rs250 to Rs300. Onions, capped at Rs175 according to notified prices, sold for Rs200 to Rs220.

Other vegetables also demonstrated a wide gap between official prices and actual market rates. Spinach, with a notified rate of Rs57 to Rs60, was available at as much as Rs120. Farm cucumbers officially cost Rs85 to Rs90, yet some retailers charged up to Rs150. Fruit prices displayed even more pronounced disparities. The authorities listed some dates between Rs310 and Rs435 per kilogram, but retail prices ranged from Rs800 to Rs2,400.

Inflation accelerates amid rising fuel prices

Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data indicate that consumer inflation increased to 11.1% in August, up from 9.2% in July. Urban inflation was recorded at 10.4%, with rural areas seeing a higher rate of 12.2%. The agency’s weekly price index for the week ending September 10 rose by 8.62% compared to the previous year. Prices of key items surged notably, with onions up 125.52% year on year, LPG up 55.42%, diesel up 45.26%, petrol increased by 39.10%, and wheat flour by 30.18%.

On September 14, the federal government approved a targeted fuel relief scheme through the Economic Coordination Committee. Under this plan, eligible two-wheelers and three-wheelers will receive Rs500 weekly. Car owners with engines up to 800cc will be entitled to Rs1,000 every 10 days. The assistance program is limited to non-commercial vehicles and one per owner, with the Ministry of IT and Telecom overseeing the digital Fuel Pass System.

Education gaps reveal ongoing societal challenges

Pakistan’s official social indicators also reveal persistent education disparities amidst the rising cost of living. According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the national literacy rate is 63% among those aged 10 and above. Male literacy stands at 73%, while female literacy is at 54%. Urban literacy reaches 74%, whereas rural areas report a rate of 55%. Punjab has a literacy rate of 68%. Across the country, 28% of children aged five to 16 remain out of school, highlighting another significant obstacle.

Government data show that federal and provincial education expenditure reached Rs962 billion in fiscal 2025, accounting for 0.8% of GDP. The latest household survey indicates that 21% of children in Punjab are out of school. While these figures do not directly link education levels to the retail pricing disparities seen in Lahore, they underscore the ongoing challenges the nation faces. Meanwhile, Punjab authorities continue publishing official market rates, even as consumers in Lahore encounter substantial differences between these official prices and the actual retail charges they face daily.
