The Central Bank of Egypt announced this preliminary figure on September 7. At the close of July, reserves were $56.2939 billion. This indicates an increase of approximately $920.6 million in August, or about 1.6%. The latest figure continues a pattern of monthly growth in 2026, pushing Egypt’s official foreign reserves beyond the $57 billion mark for the first time.

Compared to August 2025, which recorded $49.2507 billion, the current total signifies an increase of $7.9638 billion, representing around 16.2% growth annually. Egypt concluded December 2025 with net international reserves of $51.4516 billion. Over the first eight months of 2026, reserves have expanded by roughly $5.76 billion, or 11.2%. Official monthly data show a consistent rise in reserves each month since January, with gains persisting through August.
The pace of accumulation accelerated in the middle months of 2026. Reserves reached $53.1342 billion in May, then grew to $55.0723 billion in June. They further increased to $56.2939 billion in July and $57.2145 billion in August. The June rise of about $1.94 billion followed a $1.22 billion increase in July, while August added roughly $920.6 million. Collectively, these three months contributed over $4 billion to Egypt’s foreign reserve stockpile.
Foreign currency inflows stay high
Remittances from Egyptians abroad hit a record high during the 2025/2026 fiscal year. The Central Bank of Egypt reported remittance inflows totaling approximately $47.3 billion for that period. This marked a 29.6% increase compared to the roughly $36.5 billion received in the previous fiscal year. In June alone, remittances amounted to about $4.2 billion, which was 15.6% higher than the approximately $3.6 billion recorded in June 2025, according to official August figures.
Egypt’s latest available balance of payments data covers the period from July to March of fiscal year 2025/2026. During these nine months, the overall balance recorded a deficit of $1.8 billion. Meanwhile, the capital and financial account saw net inflows of $9.9 billion, and the current account registered a deficit of $14.6 billion. These figures offer the most recent official overview of Egypt’s external financial position prior to the August reserves update.
Reserve levels hit consecutive monthly peaks
Throughout 2026, the reserve figures have surpassed previous nominal highs. Reserves stood at $52.5938 billion in January, then increased to $52.7455 billion in February. They reached $52.8306 billion in March, $53.0092 billion in April, and $53.1342 billion in May. By June, reserves crossed the $55 billion mark, followed by $56 billion in July and $57 billion in August. The August figure remains provisional, consistent with the standard for the latest monthly reserve disclosures.
Compared to its position a year earlier, Egypt’s August reserves are nearly $8 billion higher. The country has now reported three consecutive month-end totals exceeding $55 billion. July marked the first month above $56 billion, and August was the first to surpass $57 billion. Since December 2025, the reserve stock has expanded by more than 10%. These August figures set a new record for Egypt’s net international reserves and sustain the continuous monthly growth observed throughout 2026.
