MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s total electricity output increased by 4.3% year-on-year through August 2026, reaching 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours. During the same period in 2025, the figure was 35,935.3 GWh. Data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information indicated growth across multiple governorates. The rise contributed approximately 1,546.5 GWh to the country’s total power production in the first eight months. In August alone, electricity generation hit 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July.

Muscat Governorate experienced the most significant surge in overall electricity output, with a year-on-year increase of 204.8%. Al Dakhiliyah registered a growth of 44.1%, while Al Wusta saw an 8.4% rise. Electricity production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah grew by 5.5%. Dhofar also experienced an increase, with electricity generation climbing 4.6% from January to August. The data reflected a broad expansion across most regions included in the national statistics.
Conversely, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah saw combined electricity output decrease by 16.4%. Musandam’s production was 376.0 GWh, showing no significant change compared to the same period in 2025. The regional data revealed substantial variation in electricity growth across Oman during this period. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classified these figures as preliminary. The data encompasses electricity output up to the end of August 2026.
Net electricity generation increases by 4.6%
Oman’s net electricity output rose by 4.6% through August to reach 36,463.9 GWh, compared to 34,871.8 GWh in the same period last year. This figure accounts for regional purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat again showed the highest growth rate, with net production rising by 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah increased by 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar recorded gains of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. Overall, net electricity output grew by approximately 1,592.1 GWh year-on-year.
Net electricity production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah increased by 5.4% compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a combined decline of 16.6%. Musandam’s net electricity generation was 368.0 GWh, with no significant change from the previous year. The regional figures generally aligned with the total electricity data, and national net output remained higher than in the first eight months of 2025.
Water production declines across Oman
Oman’s water output decreased by 3.5% through August 2026, totaling 330.65 million cubic metres. In the same period of 2025, production was approximately 342.71 million cubic metres. Muscat experienced a 6.2% drop, with production falling to about 128.07 million cubic metres from roughly 136.57 million. Water production across other governorates declined by 3.4%, reaching about 149.90 million cubic metres, down from approximately 155.19 million cubic metres during the same months last year.
Dhofar was the primary exception to the national decline, with water production increasing by 3.4% to about 52.68 million cubic metres from roughly 50.94 million in the previous year. The latest utility data thus reveal contrasting trends in electricity and water during the first eight months of 2026. While electricity output increased overall, water production remained below the levels seen in the same period of 2025.
