SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is broadening access to ChatGPT for Free and Go users by adopting GPT-5.6 Luna as the default model. The company announced that unlimited text chats will become accessible next week, with safeguards in place to prevent misuse. Additionally, free users will gain a Think button designed for questions requiring more in-depth analysis. Nonetheless, restrictions will persist for file uploads, image generation, and other features. These changes were revealed on August 6 as part of a wider update to ChatGPT.

During this week’s rollout, GPT-5.6 Luna will serve as the default model for Free and Go accounts. The introduction of unlimited text conversations and the Think button is scheduled for next week. The Think feature allows Luna more time to process complex questions before providing a response. OpenAI confirmed that unlimited text access remains subject to abuse prevention measures. This update impacts only text-based interactions, meaning additional usage limits for tools needing extra processing will remain in effect.

The expansion coincides with ChatGPT serving a vast global user base across daily and professional tasks. According to OpenAI, approximately one billion people use ChatGPT weekly for searches, planning, research, writing, and other functions. The GPT-5.6 model family, introduced in July, includes Sol, Terra, and Luna. Luna is positioned as the fastest and most economical model within that lineup. The latest update places Luna at the core of the standard experience for users on Free and Go plans.

Updated GPT-5.6 Sol Enhances Paid Plans

Users of ChatGPT Plus and Pro now have access to an upgraded version of GPT-5.6 Sol for daily interactions. Sol is now responsible for both quick replies and more complex reasoning for these subscribers. OpenAI highlighted that this update yields more targeted answers and minimizes unnecessary detail when simpler responses suffice. Additionally, Plus and Pro members can utilize a reasoning slider across web, mobile, and desktop platforms. This feature allows users to adjust how much processing ChatGPT applies to each question, including tasks such as research, planning, writing, and coding.

OpenAI also reported gains in factual accuracy based on its internal evaluations. Their assessment, which involved financial, medical, and legal prompts requiring factual information, showed responses with at least one factual error decreased by about 62% with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. For GPT-5.6 Sol, the reduction was approximately 68%. The company also stated that the updated Sol model manages dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions more reliably when these details influence an answer.

New access features safety measures and tool restrictions

OpenAI emphasized that its latest models include added protections for users under 18. The systems are trained to avoid engaging in romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, or claims that could substitute real-world relationships. They also incorporate age-related restrictions concerning sexual content, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted items, and graphic violence. The company mentioned it has introduced new evaluations for responses involving minors. When the unlimited text feature becomes available to Free and Go accounts, it will still operate within the company’s abuse safeguards.

This update impacts only the primary chat experience. OpenAI clarified that the GPT-5.6 Sol versions used in ChatGPT Work and Codex remain unchanged with this release. Existing paid subscribers can now access the upgraded Sol model and reasoning slider. Meanwhile, Free and Go users will see Luna as their default model this week, with unlimited text chats and the Think button following next week. File uploads, images, and other tools will continue to have separate limits, even after unlimited messaging is introduced.
