United States and Iraq Broaden Economic and Energy Collaboration

WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – U.S. President Donald Trump and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi explored expanded economic and energy cooperation at the White House on Tuesday. The discussions centered on American investments, oil extraction, natural gas, and electricity infrastructure development. Trump stated that the United States plans to pursue numerous commercial agreements with Iraq and that American firms would play a leading role in Iraqi oil projects. Neither government disclosed final project values, commercial terms, or schedules following the talks.

Al-Zaidi led a high-level Iraqi delegation during his first official visit to Washington since assuming office in May. Iraqi officials indicated that the visit covered areas such as trade, investment, technology, transportation, and energy. Baghdad aims to increase involvement from established American companies in major development initiatives and seeks cooperation in healthcare, education, and petroleum products. Officials described the meetings as part of a broader effort to establish practical economic partnerships between Iraq and the United States.

Energy cooperation was a key focus of the agenda. Iraq is seeking investment to boost crude oil production, develop natural gas resources, and enhance its electricity grid. The cabinet recently instructed the oil, electricity, and communications ministries to prioritize qualified U.S. companies. Additionally, Iraq’s North Oil Company signed an agreement with HKN Energy to develop the Himreen oilfield in northern Iraq, covering oil and gas extraction following technical and commercial negotiations with Iraqi authorities.

Oil and power initiatives dominate bilateral discussions

Electricity cooperation also played a significant role in the talks. Iraq authorized its Electricity Ministry to finalize a broader cooperation agreement with GE Vernova, focusing on generation and transmission infrastructure. The company already supports multiple Iraqi power projects, including turbine upgrades and grid enhancements. Past agreements have included maintenance at power plants and measures to increase generating capacity. Baghdad considers electricity supply a top public service priority as demand continues to strain the national grid.

Energy exports and production capacity were also discussed as part of the economic negotiations. Iraqi officials noted that planned energy agreements aim to develop additional export routes and support increased production capacity. Iraq primarily exports crude via Gulf shipping routes and remains heavily reliant on petroleum revenue. The government has called for more connections between Iraqi fields and Mediterranean export markets. Al-Zaidi reiterated Iraq’s commitment to OPEC and emphasized that the country should receive a fair share of production within the group.

U.S. investments grow throughout Iraq’s energy industry

Iraq possesses some of the largest proven crude reserves globally and is a founding member of OPEC. However, production growth is limited by infrastructure constraints and the OPEC+ supply framework. Baghdad has expressed its intention to increase capacity while fulfilling international commitments. Companies like HKN Energy, Chevron, and GE Vernova have been involved in Iraqi energy projects or discussions. Chevron has held talks regarding West Qurna 2, one of Iraq’s largest oilfields, and other potential developments.

The Washington discussions also extended to broader economic ties beyond oil and electricity. Trump and Al-Zaidi examined opportunities in trade, communications, technology, infrastructure, and private investment. Iraqi officials reported that the delegation included senior government representatives responsible for economic and security affairs. The two governments did not release a comprehensive list of signed commercial agreements after the meeting, but official statements confirmed that energy investment and wider economic cooperation remained the primary topics of bilateral dialogue.

EU diagnostic support expands as health authorities respond to the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak. The PCR tests will be transported to the World Health Organization’s Logistics Hub for Global Health Emergencies in Dubai. WHO will coordinate their distribution to the zones involved in Ebola containment. PCR testing is crucial for confirming infections because laboratories can analyze numerous samples with high precision. The equipment is compatible with existing laboratory setups, enabling faster diagnosis, which helps health teams identify infected individuals, organize suitable treatment and isolation, and carry out contact tracing around confirmed cases.
