BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA / RankWire.AI / – South Korea has embarked on its inaugural container vessel expedition via the Arctic route toward Europe. The 2,758-TEU PanStar Acro departed from Busan New Port around 9 p.m. on August 22. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries verified the departure and issued the schedule for the voyage. The vessel will navigate along the Northern Sea Route before stopping at three ports in Europe. This 45-day round-trip journey is set to conclude back in Busan on October 5.

PanStar Line Dot Com operates the ship, which is carrying 837 TEU as part of the Arctic shipping trial. Of this, approximately 737 TEU comprises commercial cargo, including chemical products, used vehicles, and automotive parts. The load also contains 100 empty containers. The vessel is expected to reach Arctic waters around August 30 and traverse this region by approximately September 7. Authorities estimate the Arctic segment of the voyage to cover roughly 6,400 kilometers.
According to the official itinerary, the vessel is scheduled to arrive at Felixstowe in the United Kingdom on September 9. Rotterdam in the Netherlands follows on September 11, with Gdansk in Poland slated for September 15. The ship will then return to South Korea using the same Arctic route. The distance from Busan to Rotterdam via this route is approximately 13,000 kilometers. Throughout the voyage, operational data will be collected to assess the trial’s performance.
Commercial cargo set for Europe during the trial
Prior to departure, the captain and navigation officers received specialized training for operations in polar environments. An experienced polar navigator, who has served aboard South Korea’s Araon icebreaking research vessel, joined as chief officer. The preparations also included securing insurance, emergency protocols, and administrative procedures required for the voyage. Consultations with relevant nations and organizations were completed before departure, and a 24-hour communication system will maintain contact during the Arctic crossing.
This voyage signifies South Korea’s first trial of the Northern Sea Route with a container ship. While Korean shipping firms have previously operated Arctic routes with bulk carriers and tankers, this is their first such Arctic operation since 2016. The vessel is carrying actual commercial cargo, not just conducting an empty demonstration voyage. The trial aims to gather technical, environmental, and commercial data related to container transportation through Arctic waters.
Data collection on northern shipping route underway
Preparatory work for this voyage started earlier in 2026 through a public-private council dedicated to Arctic shipping initiatives. The carrier participating in the trial was selected through a public competition held in May. Subsequent preparations included vessel readiness, cargo arrangements, crew staffing, insurance, and emergency procedures. Administrative steps necessary for international navigation were also completed before departure from Busan in August and the planned passage over Russian Arctic waters.
The government categorizes this as a trial operation rather than an ongoing container shipping service. During the round trip, data on sailing distance, duration, fuel use, and operating costs will be collected. The project will also evaluate cargo demand and other logistical aspects of container movement. The scheduled European ports serve both commercial cargo shipments and the navigation test. The PanStar Acro is expected to return to Busan New Port around October 5, completing the 45-day voyage planned.
