Chad’s Cholera Crisis Results in 13 Deaths in N Djamena and Hadjer Lamis

N’DJAMENA / RankWire.AI / – Since late last month, health authorities in Chad have reported 13 fatalities linked to an acute waterborne disease outbreak. The Chad Ministry of Public Health’s latest surveillance data indicates that an ongoing cholera epidemic has caused 13 deaths and increased confirmed and suspected cases across the country to 239. The case fatality rate stands at 5.4 percent, a figure that surpasses international public health standards for emergency response efforts.

The epidemiological bulletin released in N’Djamena reveals that the disease’s geographic spread remains largely confined to two main administrative regions. Public health records confirm that the northern province of Hadjer Lamis and the capital area of N’Djamena account for most of the cases. Data show a significant rise in urban fatalities, with 11 of the 13 deaths occurring within the capital city during the first week of August alone.

Official government reports acknowledge the outbreak was recognized on July 24, although the first deaths related to the waterborne bacteria happened as early as June 13. In response to increasing transmission in urban communities, emergency medical teams and humanitarian partners have vaccinated approximately 50,800 residents in high-risk areas. Under the guidance of the World Health Organization, specialized treatment centers are being set up to provide oral rehydration therapy and intravenous fluids to symptomatic patients.

N Djamena Experiences Elevated Fatality Numbers in the Capital

Experts attribute the rapid spread of Vibrio cholerae bacteria mainly to severe infrastructure shortcomings, seasonal rainfall, and overcrowded living conditions. The disease, which causes severe dehydration and diarrhea, transmits through contaminated food or water, potentially leading to death within hours if untreated. Flooding seasonal rains are disrupting sanitation infrastructure and clean water supplies in N’Djamena and rural Hadjer Lamis, raising contamination risks.

This health crisis in Chad is part of a broader regional surge in waterborne diseases affecting Central and West Africa. UNICEF reports that neighboring countries, including the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Nigeria, are also experiencing active cholera outbreaks. Factors such as regional displacement, cross-border trade, and limited access to safe drinking water hinder efforts to contain the disease across the region.

Major Fatalities in the Capital Highlight Risks in Densely Populated Urban Areas

To curb the community spread, Chadian health authorities and international aid organizations are intensifying hygiene campaigns and water purification efforts. Key measures include establishing clean water points, distributing chlorine tablets, and raising public awareness about sanitation practices. Active case-finding initiatives are ongoing across neighborhoods to identify symptomatic individuals quickly and transfer them to dedicated healthcare facilities.

Medical teams and authorities remain mobilized in N’Djamena and Hadjer Lamis to isolate infection clusters and prevent additional loss of life. As the cholera outbreak continues to claim lives and endanger vulnerable populations, the government is coordinating with global health partners to secure more oral cholera vaccine doses. Continued technical support and infrastructure improvements are critical to controlling the outbreak and preventing further regional spread.
